Take US 61 S at Summit Ave (WA) exit and head north, enter Hastings and take 494 to St. Paul and then exit on US Highway 61 to the west of the city. Go north and merge with Hastings, then turn left onto US 41 S (NW) into the Twin Cities area. From the north side of Chicago, turn right onto US 51 S and from the north onto US 31 S.

The earliest road through the village was the Military Road, approved by Congress in 1850 to run from Point Douglas to Fort Ripley and St. Paul. The road was opened in 1851 from Grey Cloud Island (Stillwater) to Old Cottage Grove (Afton). In the 1940s, weather highway 61 replaced Hastings Avenue, connecting the St. Paul community with the city of Saint Paul and the rest of Minnesota.
The population rose from 833 in 1950 to 4,800 in 1960, and by 2000 Cottage Grove was home to about 30,000 people and one of Minnesota's fastest-growing communities. When Grey Cloud Township was founded in the 1960s, it covered the eastern half of Grey Cloud Island with a population of about 1,500 people.
