Bordering the brand new East Ravine Parkway to the north, this community is conveniently located for those who enjoy walking, walking and cycling. The earliest road through the village was the Military Road, approved by Congress in 1850 to run from Point Douglas to Fort Ripley and St. Paul. The road was opened in 1851 from Grey Cloud Island (Stillwater) to Old Cottage Grove (Afton). In the 1940s, weather highway 61 replaced Hastings Avenue, connecting the St. Paul community with the city of Saint Paul and the rest of Minnesota.

The population rose from 833 in 1950 to 4,800 in 1960, and by 2000 Cottage Grove was home to about 30,000 people and one of Minnesota's fastest-growing communities. When Grey Cloud Township was founded in the 1960s, it covered the eastern half of Grey Cloud Island with a population of about 1,500 people.

There are 12,102 residential units in Cottage Grove, and 10,024 of them are in the Gray Cloud community, according to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. In the city of St. Paul with its approximately 4,500 inhabitants there are also 10,024 residential units.

At the 2000 census, 9,437 families lived in the city, and at the 2010 census, 7,921 families with children under 18 lived in the city. 49.8% have a married couple living together, 72.9% of them are children over 18 living with their parents, 8%. 8% have female homeowners with husbands and 14.4% are non-family. At the time of the 2010 census, the racial composition of this city is as follows: African Americans, Hispanics, Asians, whites, Native Americans and African Americans.
